A self-taught artist, Ellis Rowan travelled Australia and the world pursuing her career as a brilliant painter of wildflowers, insects and birds. From the 1870s to her death in 1922 she painted some 3000 pictures, winning many prizes, the approval of botanists and the patronage of royalty. The National Library of Australia holds over 950 of Rowan’s paintings—the largest single collection of her work.
